What Would You Like To See in DukaPress?

113

Hi there!

So we’re just about to start looking at what features must make it into the next release of DukaPress. We each have our favorite features that we’d like to see but we’re not sure what should be the priority.

So we thought: who better to ask than you guys? What features would you absolutely love to see in DukaPress 2.1?

Please note that we’re not promising to develop all (or any) of the features you guys list. We’d just love to get ideas from you.

Thank you.

Hi!! I would like to see a rental system

    • Kelvin says:

      A rental system?

      • Lukasx123 says:

I second the ‘Rental System’ request.

I was hoping to use the ‘Catalogue Mode’ as a kind of internal corporate ordering system to enable staff to request various print-based marketing collateral (such as brochures, etc).

However, another key marketing resource we loan out to staff are exhibition stands for events, so we’d need functionality to enable staff to reserve/book the resources over a set period of time and enable them to see on a calendar when the resources are reserved for other members of staff and when they are available to book.

Keep up all the good work though, it’s a great plugin! 😉

  2. Igor says:

First, a Buy Now image. Button is functional, but image boosts conversion rate. Shopers are more prone to buy when the graphics of the site tingles their eyes.
Second, improvements in products creation: a button in the text editing window for inserting products is much more easy to use than pasting shortcode. WPSA plugin has solved this elegantly and it works great.
Third, tag-based upsell and cross-sell options, where each product page gets automaticaly tagged as Product, and based on 1, 2, 3 (user-devined) tags of the post DukaPress can generate related products icons, with featured icon, price and Add to Cart check box.
Fourth, an easy way in backoffice to set Digital Downloads easily. Best to have an option of uploading file, and a way to select a file from a pre-defined Products folder on the server
Fifth: at the checkout, a simple checkbox to turn on Subscribe Me to the Mailing List option. When people buy they’re most prone to subscribe to mailing lists.
Six: a way to set logo and set colors of the look of the cart. As it is now, it’s very unobtrusive and almost unnoticable. Although this may work for B2B commerce, it’s not very helpful for B2C transactions.
Guess this is enough for now. You guys have done a good job with the cart, I’d say it’s fully functional and these extra tweaks can make it a favorite choice for anyone.

  3. Igor says:

P.S. Mobile Payments too! This is going to be huge as integrated devices such as iPad clones get more and more popular. PCs are no more the primary online device. It’s smartphones and integrated devices.

    • Kelvin says:

We’d love to work on this but it may take a while (because we are in Nairobi, Kenya) and currently mobile payments work so very differently in every country so its hard to feature this in. But the stuff that is on there now works for Kenyan mobile payment systems – more to follow.

  4. Eva Isotalo says:

    Hi,

At checkout the discount and tax is not correctly handled for Sweden (and most European countries).
    The current setup:
After applying the discount it is deducted from the items price before tax when it should be deducted from the price including tax. Here is why:
The item price is always the same thus also the tax for it and this is what we have to put down in our annual tax declaration. The discount is deducted on the total price (item including tax) and before shipping cost.

  5. Julia says:

It sort of defeats the purpose of selling digital downloads to have to manually approve the payment and manually send payment notification! When I buy a digital product online, I expect to get it right away.

I’d love it if there was a way to auto-approve transactions. Or is there, and I just can’t find it?

    • Kelvin says:

If you are using the automated payment gateways (PayPal, etc) then the whole thing is automated. It only becomes manual if you pay via a ‘semi manual’ payment mode (e.g. cash at store, mobile, bank transfer etc though I don’t know why one would pay via these for a download).

      • Julia says:

Thanks for the reply, Kelvn – I’m glad to hear that the whole thing should be automated. But I must have something set up incorrectly. When I place a test order, I get a receipt from PayPal, and the DukaPress-generated invoice, but when I log into the admin/order log, the item still says “Pending,” and nothing else happens until I click the “Pending.” I have auto-return turned on, and the thank you page specified. Not sure what else I need to do!

        • Kelvin says:

Hey Julia, I’m forwarding you an email that I received as a customer after buying a digital product from the DukaPress Demo store (http://dukapress.org/demo/digital/). Note that the email completes the transaction, even giving the customer the file download link.

In the back end, the transaction is appropriately marked as paid. Everything is nice and automated. 🙂 ( http://dukapress.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/digital-products-success.gif )

If you want you can try buy that product (it is $1 with no shipping cost) and see for yourself that you get a download link.

        • Kelvin says:

Oh my, I just discovered a really ugly bug that may be responsible for causing the problems on your end. 🙁

If you do not set the shipping mode to “free” in DukaPress Settings, then you get all sorts of problems when a customer checks out. Obviously this is terrible and we promise you a speedy bugfix!

Thank you so much for helping us catch this one.

  6. Igor says:

How about an XML Product import or CSV product import option? In this way we can easily add dozens of products easily, instead of doing each product “by hand”.

  7. Deena says:

Hi, I’d really like a micropay type option, where I could ‘sell’ customers the ability to put any amount (like $20 credit) in their account and then pick up items over time that add up to the amount on account.

    • Kelvin says:

Wow, this is pretty interesting. Could you flesh out the idea some more? Thanks.

      • Igor says:

I think there are some carts that offer this kind of “credit buying”, my 2 cents is to have a membership approach, where people will need to create a profile, and then buy credits so that the cart may tie in the purchase with an existing email account that’s already in the system.

        • Deena says:

They’d need an account anyway, because I want them to be able to download what they buy over and over again, but a membership–at least the membership plugins I’ve seen–would tie them into receiving a certain thing (access to a member area with premium content, for instance), whereas I want them to be able to choose what they spend their credit on.

      • Deena says:

        Thanks! I like being interesting.

I sell ebooks. Most of them are a reasonable price, between 7 and $12 depending on length. However, I’d like to start selling shorter works, but if I were buying them, I wouldn’t want to hit my bank account up for 75 cents here and 2.50 there. I’d rather have credit on account so I can put in 20.00 and buy 15 short stories over time. It could work like a gift certificate, except the credit would go to the buyer rather than to someone else. Fictionwise did a lot of business with their micropay system, but they’ve shut it down, so I think there’s a niche that needs filling.

    • Eva Isotalo says:

      Excellent idea!

  8. I’d like to see the ability to set discounts at a dollar amount rather than just a percentage on the coupon codes.

the ability to easily adjust the color and maybe button sizes for “buy now” would be great. I agree that the current default button blends in and is nearly impossible to see.

  9. Lynne says:

I just actually made a post and tagged Dukapress on the WP forums, before I saw this.. But here’s what I had to say:

Now that I’ve familiarized myself with the software, there are a few minor things that I feel it’s lacking…

    1. Ability to add extra check-out fields. (Tick this box to sign up for our newsletter, etc)

    2. Multiple shipping options. Currently, it only allows for one static shipping option, and the recent site I developed offers 2. First Class and Priority. It was easy to get around, I just created a new product named “Priority Shipping” and let people add that to their cart for the faster mail service, still would look nicer if it was there on check-out, however.

    3. This last one is a little out-there, and may not actually be worth it to code, as I can’t think of anyone else that would need something like this but my current client.. But it would be nice if the variations also had a discount field. A percent discount instead of a static discount would be best for MY shop, but I’m sure a regular price drop would be just as suitable for anyone else.

Okay, that’s all I got. For the record… I LOVE Dukapress. It is light-weight, easy to customize, and essentially it has everything any shop should EVER need. It’s a great plug-in, with an AMAZING developer team who is ALWAYS on hand for support. I’ve donated a little to them and plan to donate more, as far as WP E-Commerce solutions go.. This is it.

  10. Lynne says:

Oh, I also think an “Additional Comments” field at check-out is almost a necessity!

  11. Lynne says:

Oh, I have another one! How about variation groups? So that you don’t have to re-add the variations everytime you create a product.. Just create them once, and then click a check box with the variation set name whenever you add a new product?

Again, this may only be useful to a small fraction of Dukapress users. I have some 30 products, each with 7 variations, each variation has an average of 5 options. So, a variation set would have been awesome :p

  12. Igor says:

another idea I was forced to come up with… How about an option to “blacklist” a Paypal account, so that we can blacklist a buyer? I have an open case of “Product not delivered” from a guy who bought from my site in Sunday, and got the digital product an hour later in his email, and he has an open claim with PayPal, that keeps the money on hold, and from what I’ve read if he doesnt close the case he gets his money back. Now this is not a huge loss for me since I sell digital products, but it can be very uneasy for people that sell tangible goods. Paypal could care less about such issues, and having this seller protection module can help us from getting scammed by the same person over and over again.

  13. Chromaloop says:

I would really love to see the ability to share product attributes. I’m a little frightened at the prospect of having to manually edit each product if I want to manage a group of attributes shared throughout many products.

  14. Chromaloop says:

Sadly, after more investigation, it looks like shared attributes would be a nice feature to add.

    • Kelvin says:

How would the ideal solution work/look like?

      • Chromaloop says:

Ideally I think users could define attributes much the same as they do categories. So you would set something up like Size (XS, S, M, L) in advance and be able to choose from the a list of available attributes once you’re in the product setup page. That way you could edit an attribute in one place and have the edit propagate to all products using the attribute.

  15. Igor says:

just thought of another idea, how about having a widget called “HoverCart” that would be say a 200×200 image of a cart that will have animated Add To Cart trick, so when people add an item, the image of the item “flies” into the hovercart which isn’t positioned firmly but hovers over the screen and is always at the right-bottom (or top) corner, so people can always see what’s in their cart. This option would especially be nice for more hype products such as jewelry, ornaments, gadgets and so on.

  16. fuelNYC says:

do you have options/dropdowns that affect price? i want to try your system but must have that option to do it.

    thanks!

  17. Chromaloop says:

I would also love to see product thumbnail images on the checkout page.

  18. Udo Kupsch says:

    Hi there – great Job!

    1. I would like to see an option to choose wether the product-price is already including the tax or not.
    2. For germany, we have a very odd law. The payment process must be like:
    – Go to checkout, check your order, click a link “everything´s fine, next step”
    – Provide your shipping- and billingadress, BOTH must be possible to do in a separate form, click a button “next step”
    – Check your order, shipping- and billingdetails AGAIN, and THEN click the button “order now”.

    It´s sad but true.
I just started with DukaPress, and I will try to figure this whithout touching the code 🙂

    Greetings from Germany

    Udo Kupsch

    • Eva Isotalo says:

I agree with this suggestion. Living in and selling from Sweden it is essential. The lack of this is one of the reasons I can’t use Dukapress yet.

      • Udo Kupsch says:

        Hi Eva,

as far as I have seen, these functions print the different elements on checkout-page:
        dpsc_print_checkout_table_html
        dpsc_print_checkout_discount_form
        dpsc_pnj_show_contact_information
        dpsc_print_checkout_payment_form
        dpsc_print_checkout_inquiry_form

So it should be possible to put each of them on a single page, but I haven´t checked yet if I can intercept the checkout-url or if i can simply provide an url to a page with one or more of the above functions.

  19. Donna Dunn says:

I need to display the category name in the grid view, but $category lists all the categories by number e.g.: ”1,3,4,5,9”

I need the code that 1) translates the ID to the Category name and 2) displays only that product’s category.

Thanks to anyone who can assist!

    D

    • Kelvin says:

Hmmm, a little complicated because the category ID is inside the shortcode. trying to get this for you. However, how about naming the page that category name?

  20. max says:

Hi, I would appreciate an option to show prices including tax (presently taxes are added to the price). In Europe a seller is legally obliged to state the end price not the netprice. In addition it would be necessary to state the tax included. If there was an option to choose whether to show prices as gross or net prices this would be just great!

  21. Darby says:

    Hi,

I am quite new to all of this, but have already had some questions answered by Kelvin. Thanks.

I would like to be able to display the number of items in stock on the page. I am selling fabric, which is often of older patterns and cannot be reordered, so it would be useful if the customer knew how much was available, before buying. Without this feature, the website becomes very difficult to use.

I would also like to see a shipping option that works on a table, 1-2 items would cost so much, then 4 -9 items, etc. It would also be good if after a certain number of items, a “Call for shipping” message would come up. I realize that this can all be done if you play around with shipping by weight, but it would be cool to be able to do it as an actual option. The ability to ship this way is the reason I have switched from WP-Commerce to DukaPress.

So far, I love your product.

    Thanks

  22. max says:

I don’t want to appear unmodest, but if I may add cvs import to my wish list that would be cool … 🙂

  23. Igor says:

some great ideas here… hope Kelvin and the DukaTeam will manage all these requests and shoot out upgrades very soon.
I’m a digital products seller, and need to remove all the unnecessary friction in the checkout process, so I’d like to get rid of all the Address form and even the email request. How can I do this? All I need from the Checkout page is just a way for the buyer to review their cart, see some other related products they may like that the cart could gather by listing other products taht have 2-3 similar tags with the products already in the shopping cart, an “I agree with Terms and Condidions” checkbox and a Checkout button. Can I do this with the existing version?
And about the taxation issues, I suppose the European Union has one way of doing things, while USA/Canada have it differently… so instead of trying to be a one-size-fits-all approach, you can develop an EU-version, a US version and so on? Or just have the taxation handling system as downloadable addon to the tax-free cart mechanism?

    • Kelvin says:

Igor, thank you so much for all the ideas!

Technically, what you are describing is possible though you would have to customise quite a bit. We’d like to keep things ‘generic’ by default but very customisable – though we obviously need to balance with what would be most convenient to the (awesome) people who use DukaPress.

Anyway, we’re thinking hard about what to do with the checkout page – it needs to be much much more customisable than it is right now and we’re working on this.

Also, I wouldn’t want to go the way of separate versions. I’d rather see the taxation system made optional and then perhaps different DukaPress taxation plugins that you could use if you so wished. How would that work?

  24. Kelvin says:

I want to personally that you for taking the time to make all these wonderful suggestions. We cannot do them all at once but I do promise you that we’re thinking through all of what you have suggested and we’ve already started implementing them. Thanks again.

    Please keep suggesting. 😀

(PS we should get a forum, eh?)

    • Eva Isotalo says:

      >>PS we should get a forum, eh?<<
      hmm… good thinking! 😉

I guess, the more popular this app gets the higher demands and requests you will have. We've been soft on you so far. 🙂

  25. Sam says:

Hi, this is a great add on and such a friendly developer!
Apart from some of the things mentioned here are some suggestions:

The product in the cart to be a link
Give paypal the address so that the customer doesn’t have to type it out twice
Country dropdown box be set to a certain country from the backend
    Payment option for ‘telephone’,
Custom status apart from pending and paid (such as refund) with corresponding custom email

    Many thanks for your consideration!

  26. Andria says:

Can you add a function to select what taxes would be charged on different items?
That is all I’m lacking here with this plug in. There are two different levels of tax on my products and I can’t see how to reflect this unless the pricing includes the tax.

    • Kelvin says:

Hi Andria. We’re working hard to revamp the way DukaPress handles taxes. Please bear with us for just a little while longer to develop and release this in the near future.

  27. Mandy says:

Is it possible to have a text attribute for a product (e.g. for personalisation text)? Not sure if this is available in some way through the custom fields already – if so can someone point me in the right direction for how to do it?
Other than that, this seems a really well thought-out and easy to use plugin – thankyou!

  28. Shelly says:

What about the option for a shorter checkout (without the shipping address), I personalize my item then email it to them at a later date and don’t need their mailing address or the downloads feature.

Also what about a comments to seller text area?

  29. Kev says:

I’d really like a way to include a free gift with some products in my shop, or a function to have a product automatically added to the cart at checkout. The free gift is a download so the best way I can see to achieve this right now is by sending the customer a receipt with a link to the DL though my client would really like to see the freebie represented graphically during the shopping process and at the checkout.

Any advice on a better way to approach this with the existing version would also be greatly appreciated.

Really good system btw guys, I just tried this out for the first time having struggled to effectively theme wp-ecommerce for some time. Very light and does just what I need it to. Nice one!

  30. NinjaDragon says:

Extending the payment possiblities with iDeal would be a nice new feature

  31. Moises says:

Hi haven’t really tested but I can’t find the feature to create a BUY NOW button that would bypass the shopping cart to sell digital products.

I found DukaPress while searching for a replacement for e-junkie.

Is this possible or can you add it for future development?

  32. Lubna says:

I’d like to see support for 2checkout, since my business is located in Egypt, which is not supported by Paypal.

    Thank you

  33. Lubna says:

Hi again, I found that Alertpay does support Egypt, but one thing didn’t work .. my shop’s currency is EGP, and I configured the Alertpay, option, to send payments in USD, however when redirected after checkout, the customer get’s this message:

We apologize, but the payment button settings are incorrect. The following problems occurred:

    * ap_currency field is invalid.

  34. Lubna says:

Product category templates would be great!

  35. Neill says:

Put me down for the personalised products option please. I’m just changing my personalised gifts site from FrontPage to WordPress and your shopping cart would be just the ticket – once the option is included.

  36. Mark says:

I’d really like the option of having categories for products.

Click on products, then the grid displays the categories (animals, cars, misc, adult, etc.) then when you click on the category it goes to a page that displays the products in a grid.

  37. Greg F says:

It would be nice if you would hide the fields in the wp custom fields meta box that are already shown in the custom meta box (price, weight, etc).

  38. paul says:

so, the store i am setting up for a client, that has some products (fabric) that would/could like to be sold by the half yard. so the quantity would .5. is there a way to specify quantity (.5) for a page of related items without using the variation dropdown option, just allowing the customer to change quantity in the checkout?

i edited the last line in the following in the dukapress/php/dp-cart.php file to read .5 whick is normally 1.

    function dpsc_add_to_cart() {
    $product_id = trim($_POST[‘product_id’]);
    $product_name = trim(strip_tags($_POST[‘product’]));
    $product_base_price = $_POST[‘price’];
    $product_updated_price = $_POST[‘dpsc_price_updated’];
    $product_variation_names = ”;
    $product_variation_prices = 0.00;
    $product_quantity = isset($_POST[‘quantity’]) ? intval($_POST[‘quantity’]) : .5 ;

although it works to some extent, it made all items in the store half price which is not good.

whats interesting is that when at an item in the store and you hit “add to cart” repeatedly the quantity and value would go up in increments as expected. but if you wanted to change the quantity on the “checkout” page to from 2 to say 3.5, the value will round back to 3.

thanks for any help you can give. you have helped me out before and results were awesome.

    • Kelvin says:

Is there another way to approach this? I just do not think that having half a product, or 3.5 products is a good idea and I’m not sure the code is currently set up to work this way.

      • paul says:

part one would be to purchase “dukapress styles”. the options of not showing the “add to cart button on grid page” and “price on grid page” would be a partial answer. part two , would be not to show the variation price in the drop down, as this is confusing to customers. i am guessing,(because i haaven’t the need to purchase “styles”, but the selections are universal and not for individual pages.

(not showing the variation price in the drop down would be awesome, regardless of what we are talking about here – although i might be smart enough to edit the code to not show the price…… maybe!)

thats all i got for now

      • Ted Helgeson says:

Why not use the dropdowns to specify per say a mesurement choice such as per: inch, foot, yard, pound, ounce, pint, and so on….. i know it’s a long way to go to get the result nessessary but its do-able with the system the way it is until a “fix/module” can be set in.

        • Ted Helgeson says:

opps… after reading your post again, I see you wanted to do without using the dropdowns. It pays to comprehend what we read before we comment. 🙂

” Better to be thought a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubt”

          -Mark Twain-

          • paul says:

            hello ted.

kelvin, this might make a great addition/fix for the variation dropdown in the future?

after spending a couples of hours looking at the code, i come across what is possibly the best answer for now. my opposition to the drop down option was the variation price was shown, which could confuse a shopper. as a side note, fabric is always priced by the yard, for instance, $10.50/yard. so i found that in the drop down i can list the first option in the drop down with a negative price to make the (1/2 yard, -5.25). then make in the drop down (1 yard, 0) (1.5yds, $10.50) (2yds, $15,75) and so on…

so, in line 121 of dukapress/php/dp-products.php i deleted the part that displays the variation price.

            before:
            $dropdown_content .= ”.$get_var[0].$var_price_text.”;

            after:
            $dropdown_content .= ”.$get_var[0].”;

this give a much more professional look to the drop down in my opinion.

a side problem is that the quantity is the shopping cart (on the side widget or the main checkout page) is shown as “1” but the price is correct as to the drop down option selected. now i have to look into how to make the the quantity ($var_price_text) a shopper selected to be added with the description, to give them confidence they have made the correct choice.

            that’s it for now.

Since digital products don’t require actual shipping, I think I’d increase sales if I didn’t have to require that much information about the customers who are paying by PayPal. You know?

    • wham says:

I know what you mean phmadore. We are currently working on some a better checkout page for digital products. Keep looking for updates on this site 🙂

  41. Everything in my shop is based about variations. And variation is not the star of DukaPress. One suggestion, Every product must have a price (why ?), and when product is set to ZERO or 0$, in the grid when you see the product, it sell for zero … bizzare. Then you click on, and the first variation is selected, and the price is set !… the variation is not included in the cart description.

    • Kelvin says:

I apologise for this inconvenience. We’re working on changing how variations work and I hope we can have something to show very very soon. Thank you.

  42. Kriss says:

hi there – I’m loving the look of dukapress so far – the way you add products as posts is great. I just have one problem – I’m building a site for a friend who originally said paypal is fine, but he’s now decided he doesn’t like paypal and wants to use his banks’ hosted payment page option – any chance of adding that as one of the payment options? It just need to send a form to the correct URL… something like:

…somehow the items and prices need to be added in there also but it’s a little over my head!
Any chance of somehting like this? Or does it exist already and I’ve missed it?

  43. jimmy says:

I would like to have the ‘Product name’ in the ‘Shop Order Log’ to link to the product.
I may be wrong but at the moment if I have the two products with the same name and price I have no way of telling which one the customer wants.
I have lots of very similar products and the chance of having the same name and price twice is quite high.
Awesome shopping cart… thanks for sharing it

Sure a really long list – in short: extended and advanced product, customer, supplier/vendor, manufacturer and stock management, legal requirements to run the shop in Europe esp. in Germany. And features that I’d like to have as plug-ins as well: custom product designer (e.g. T-Shirts, computer or food/meals, individual gift baskets or flowers)

The addons of osC I just listed resemble the features I need or I think some people could need. I’m looking for a solution over five years and yet I couldn’t find it. OSC sure is nice and great but nothing in order to content management. I’m a huge fan of WP so I like DukaPress too. But I know it only a few hours now. It has the potencial to be the greatest shop solution for WP. So if you want to build up an professional soution for “more than a few products” then I will support you if I can.

    Hi there,

We would like to add a payment method. In Holland we have Ideal, you can pay by logging directly into your banking account. Is there a possibility to integrate this in DukaPress?
If not, how can we add this by ourselfs?
Is there a possibility to clear the customer log? We can clear the order log, but we couldn’t find how to clear the customer log.

    Howdy,
Our website has been up and running for some time now. It seems to be working just fine, but now we want to add a different kind of product and I’m not sure how to go about it. We currently sell fabric only, and it is sold by the “Yard”. We would now like to sell books and “Fat quarters” (Pre-cut fabric) , which will be sold by “Each”. Is there a way to designate what the quantity type is for a product so that it won’t tell a customer that he just bought 1 yard of books? 🙂

Also, I realize that this may be a wordpress, rather than DukaPress question, but is there a way for me to look at the guts of the mySQL database behind the whole thing? I am an Access programmer, but I think I could probably make some sense out of it. I just don’t really know how to get a look at it.

Thanks for a great product, and all of the help you have given me in the past.

    Darby

I would love to see a “pay what you want” or donation based payment option. I want to offer comics as a digital download on my website and I don’t want to charge a set amount, because I think that is why some people refrain from buying the print version.

  49. Webchap says:

Hi there, how can I align the product image, on the main product page to the left and have all the text etc. on the right hand side. Currently the text all goes underneath.

    • Kelvin says:

You have to do this via CSS. if you look at your page source code, you will see that everything output by DukaPress is very easy to control via CSS so what you want to do would be really simple if you know CSS.

Thanks, managed to sort this. Once other question. When you add a product you click to add the image. The image shows up on the product page fine, with lightbox etc. however you cannot see it showing within the admin area.

What if you then want to edit the image to make it a different one, or to add images to that product? Can’t see where to do this. Can you please advise?
